A collab is content made jointly with another creator. Both audiences see it, and each side is introduced to people who already like something similar.
Why it works better than most growth tactics
The recommendation is implicit. Someone appearing alongside a creator you follow arrives with a level of trust that no amount of being shown by an algorithm produces.
Several platforms also support genuine co-authoring, where one post appears on both accounts and pools its performance, which is considerably more effective than each person posting their own cut.
Choosing who
Similar audience, similar size. Reaching upward is tempting and rarely reciprocated, and a mismatch in size usually means one side does most of the work. Overlapping subject matter with different angles works better than doing the same thing.
Agreeing it properly
Even without money, agree who films, who edits, when it goes out and whether either of you can reuse the footage afterwards. Collabs go wrong for the same reasons brand deals do: nobody wrote down what was expected.
