Watch time is how long viewers actually spend watching a video. Related is retention, usually shown as the percentage still watching at each point.

Why platforms care about it more than you do

A like costs a viewer nothing. Time is the one thing they cannot fake, so platforms treat it as the strongest signal that something was worth showing to more people. On short-form especially, retention is closer to the deciding factor than any other number on the screen.

What to look at

Not the average alone. The shape of the retention curve says more:

  • A cliff in the first two seconds is a hook problem, not a content problem.
  • A steady slope is normal and mostly fine.
  • A dip in the middle usually marks a section that could be cut.
  • A rise anywhere means people rewatched something, which is worth understanding and doing again.

The trap

Longer videos can have lower percentage retention and far more total watch time. Optimising the percentage alone quietly pushes you toward making everything shorter, which is not always the right answer.
