On October 15, Instagram rolled out customizable digital Profile Cards globally to all accounts. While Instagram has offered basic QR codes for profile sharing for several years, the new Profile Card transforms that basic utility into an interactive, two-sided digital business card.
One side of the card displays your profile picture, display name, handle, category label, bio, profile links, and any profile song you have selected. The reverse side features a scannable QR code pointing directly to your profile, displayed over a custom background image or color of your choice. You can flip between the two sides inside the app, share the card directly via messaging apps, post it to your Instagram Story as a rotating animation, or download it as an animated video to publish across other platforms.
For creators, swapping contact information has often been awkward. You either spell out a complex handle with underscores and numbers, hand someone a paper business card that gets thrown away, or ask them to search your name in an app where competing accounts crowd the results. Profile Cards solve this problem. Here is how the feature works, how to set yours up properly, and how to put it to work across your networking and content strategy.
How Instagram Profile Cards Work
Your Profile Card pulls dynamic information directly from your existing Instagram account while adding customizable visual layers. As of October 24, 2026, every public and private account has access to the tool.
The card consists of two distinct faces:
- The Info Face: This side resembles a compact version of your profile header. It features your current profile picture, your account display name, your handle, your account category (such as "Digital Creator" or "Video Creator"), your bio text, and your external links. If you have added a song to your Instagram profile, that song title appears here and plays when someone views the card.
- The QR Face: Swiping horizontally flips the card around to display a scannable QR code paired with your handle. Anyone using a smartphone camera or the Instagram in-app camera can scan this code to jump straight to your profile without typing a single letter.
The major upgrade over Instagram's previous QR code system is visual customization. Previously, you could only change the color tint or add emoji patterns behind a bare code. With Profile Cards, you can upload any high-resolution image from your camera roll to serve as the backdrop for the QR side, while setting an accent color that frames the info side.
Instagram also built native sharing and export tools directly into the card screen. You can copy a web link to the card, send it through messaging platforms like WhatsApp, post it directly to Stories, or export an MP4 video showing the card spinning between both sides.
Step-by-Step: Setting Up and Customizing Your Card
Setting up your Profile Card takes only two to three minutes, but doing it thoughtfully ensures your branding looks polished when an agency rep, sponsor, or potential collaborator sees it.
Step 1: Open Your Profile Card
Open the Instagram app on iOS or Android and tap your profile picture in the bottom right corner. Just beneath your bio and action buttons, tap Share profile. The screen will display your Profile Card. You can swipe across the screen with your finger to watch the card flip between the info side and the QR code side.
Step 2: Edit Your Card Design
Tap the pencil icon in the top right corner of the screen to open the customization menu. You will see three options:
- Change background: Tap this to select a photo from your device's photo library. This image will become the backdrop of the QR code face. A good practice is to pick an image that matches your niche, such as a crisp portrait, an aesthetic shot of your studio, or a brand graphic.
- Change color: If you prefer a minimal design instead of a photo, tap this to pick an accent color. This color fills the QR code screen and acts as the border tone around your info card.
- Edit profile: Tapping this takes you to your standard Instagram profile settings. Because the front of the card displays your bio, links, and category, use this shortcut to make sure those elements are current.
Step 3: Align Your Profile Elements
Before you download or share your card, check how your profile elements render on the front face:
- Your Bio: The Profile Card has limited vertical space. If your bio is long, line breaks may look crowded. Edit your bio down to one or two punchy sentences describing what you make and who you make it for.
- Your Links: Make sure your primary link directs to your portfolio, media kit, or main storefront rather than an outdated page.
- Your Profile Song: If you use a profile song, remember that it plays when someone opens the digital card. Choose an audio track that fits your brand identity rather than a temporary meme track that might confuse a corporate brand manager.
Step 4: Export and Save Your Assets
Once you are satisfied with the look, look at the buttons along the bottom of the screen:
- Share profile: Opens your phone's native share sheet to send a link via direct message, email, or chat apps.
- Copy link: Copies your direct profile URL to your clipboard.
- Download: This is the most valuable feature for creators. Tapping download allows you to save a static graphic of the QR code or export a vertical video asset showing the card rotating between the two faces. Save both files to your phone's photo library.
- Add to story: Generates an Instagram Story draft with the animated card centered on the screen, ready for stickers, text, and publishing.
Practical Ways Creators Can Use Profile Cards Right Now
A tool is only as good as the workflow behind it. Rather than letting your Profile Card sit forgotten inside your app settings, incorporate it into your daily networking, marketing, and client pitches.
1. In-Person Networking and Creator Events
Conferences, brand dinners, product launch events, and creator meetups move quickly. When you meet an agency representative, a brand marketing manager, or a peer creator, do not ask them to type your handle.
Open Instagram, tap Share profile, and hand them your phone. They can point their smartphone camera at the screen and land on your profile in one second.
To move even faster in crowded venues where cellular service is slow:
- Export the static QR card image to your phone's camera roll.
- Set that QR image as a temporary lock screen wallpaper during the event, or save it to an easily accessible photo widget on your home screen. You can show your lock screen without opening the app or needing an internet connection.
2. Upgrading Your Media Kit and Rate Card
When pitching brands for paid sponsorships, you want to eliminate friction for the marketing coordinator reviewing your materials. Static PDF media kits often feature clickable links that break when opened across different PDF viewers or email clients.
Take the static QR code image exported from your Profile Card and drop it into the contact section of your media kit. Add a simple label next to it: "Scan with your phone camera to view my live feed and community." When the brand marketer reads your PDF on their laptop or desktop monitor, they can hold up their phone, scan the code, and immediately browse your latest Reels and Stories.
3. Cross-Platform Audience Funnels
Instagram allows you to download your Profile Card as an animated MP4 video. This video features a smooth, rotating transition displaying your bio on one side and your QR code on the other.
This video file is formatted vertically, making it ready for cross-posting:
- Threads: Post the video asset with a short introduction explaining what your Instagram content focuses on.
- YouTube Shorts and TikTok: Use the video asset as a visual hook or as the closing scene in a video directing viewers to your Instagram-exclusive content, such as behind-the-scenes Stories or broadcast channels.
- Pinterest: Pin the animated asset to relevant boards with a direct link to your Instagram page.
4. Physical Collateral and Merchandise
If you sell physical products, run a print newsletter, host workshops, or exhibit at trade shows, you need physical touchpoints that bridge the gap to your digital community.
Because the QR code exported from your Profile Card is a standard high-resolution code, it can be printed cleanly:
- Print packing inserts for your merchandise orders featuring the QR code and a note inviting customers to tag you in unboxing photos.
- Add the QR code to physical banners, booth backdrops, or event flyers so attendees can follow your account from a distance.
Profile Card Setup Checklist
Use this quick checklist to ensure your Profile Card is optimized before using it in public or sending it to commercial partners:
| Component | What to Check | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Profile Photo | High contrast, centered headshot or logo | Instantly recognizable when displayed in small formats |
| Category Label | Set in "Edit profile" | Clearly communicates your industry (e.g., Artist, Writer, Fitness Coach) |
| Bio Text | Under 150 characters, clean formatting | Explains your content focus without cluttering the card |
| Primary Link | Verified active URL | Directs scanners to your portfolio, shop, or core funnel |
| Background Image | High contrast against black or white QR patterns | Ensures smartphone cameras can detect the code instantly |
| Profile Song | Professional, brand-appropriate audio | Complements your personal brand when previewed |
| Saved Video File | Exported to camera roll | Ready for offline access or cross-platform publishing |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
While the Profile Card is simple to configure, a few common design and functional missteps can hurt your results.
Mistake 1: Busy, Low-Contrast Background Images
The QR code needs high visual contrast to function reliably. If you choose a background image that is busy, heavily patterned, or the exact same shade as the QR code foreground, smartphone camera sensors will struggle to lock onto the pattern.
Always test your card before relying on it:
- Customize the background.
- Take a screenshot or export the image.
- Have a friend scan it using their phone from two feet away in normal lighting. If their camera does not read it within one second, switch to an image with darker shadows, lighter negative space, or a solid color.
Mistake 2: Neglecting Your Profile Category
Many creators turn off their profile category label to make their feed look minimal. However, on the Profile Card, your category appears prominently near your name. If a sponsor scans your card, having a clear category like "Photographer," "Educator," or "Podcaster" gives immediate business context. Make sure your category is visible and accurate in your main account settings.
Mistake 3: Cluttering Your Bio with Temporary Announcements
If your bio currently promotes a temporary sale, an event date that passed last week, or an inside joke with friends, that text will appear front and center on your Profile Card. Before attending industry events or downloading your card video for cross-platform promotion, rewrite your bio to focus on your permanent value proposition: who you are, what problems you solve, and what viewers will find on your channel.
Mistake 4: Treating the Card as a Replacement for a Link Hub
A Profile Card is a gateway to your Instagram account, not a replacement for a multi-link landing page or full creator website. It exists to drive follows, start direct message conversations, and verify your identity in person. Continue maintaining your external portfolio, email sign-up forms, and store links in your bio so that new visitors who arrive through your card can easily explore deeper into your business.
Putting your Profile Card together takes just a few taps. Once configured, it gives you a clean, repeatable way to turn real-world conversations and cross-platform attention into permanent audience growth.
