Most Halloween caption lists are a hundred puns in a row, which is why every post in your feed on the 31st sounds identical.

These are grouped by what you are actually posting, and there is a short section at the end on writing your own, which is the part that matters.

Halloween runs through Thursday, 1 October 2026 to Saturday, 31 October 2026, in about 3 weeks. Worth saving now, since captions are the thing everyone leaves to the last minute.

For a costume photo

  • Took me four hours. Worth roughly ninety seconds of your attention.
  • I had a vision. This is not it, but I am committed.
  • Guess who I am. I will wait.
  • Not my best work. Definitely my most expensive.
  • Nobody at the party knew. I have never felt more misunderstood.
  • Costume: strong. Ability to sit down: gone.
  • I peaked in October.
  • This took planning I do not apply to anything else in my life.

For a group photo

  • We planned this in July and still ran out of time.
  • One group chat, six months, three arguments, one photo.
  • Half of us understood the theme.
  • Coordinated. Barely.
  • The group chat delivered for once.
  • Somebody had to be the least recognisable one.

For couples

  • We agreed on this in an unusually calm negotiation.
  • One of us cared more. You can tell which.
  • Matching, against my better judgement.
  • Two costumes, one budget, several disagreements.

For pets

  • He has no idea what is happening and is furious about it.
  • Consent was not given.
  • This lasted eleven seconds.
  • The look of a creature plotting revenge.
  • Worth every second of the betrayal in his eyes.

Funny

  • Emotionally, I am the third pumpkin from the left.
  • My costume is "person who peaked in October".
  • Dressed as someone with their life together. Very scary.
  • I am not in costume. This is just my face in autumn.
  • Went as my own to-do list. Terrifying.
  • Scariest thing this month was my screen time report.

Spooky, without the puns

  • The dark gets earlier every day and I have decided to enjoy it.
  • Something about this time of year makes everything feel like a film.
  • Cold air, orange light, nothing to prove.
  • The only month where the weather matches my personality.
  • All the atmosphere, none of the plot.

Short ones for stories

  • Committed.
  • Regrets: several.
  • Peak October.
  • Worth it.
  • Send help.
  • No notes.

For creators posting about work

  • The scariest part of this month is my Q4 deadline.
  • Dressed as someone who batches their content in advance.
  • My costume is "creator who has scheduled next week already".
  • Nothing haunts me like the drafts folder.

How to write your own

The lists above are fine and everyone is using lists like them. What actually performs is specific to you, and there are only three rules.

Be specific rather than clever. "Took four hours and I cannot sit down" beats a pun, because it is true and nobody else has that exact sentence.

Say the thing your photo does not. The picture already shows the costume. The caption should add the story, the cost, the argument, or the regret.

Open a small loop. A question, a half-told story, an opinion someone will disagree with. Comments come from people having something to say, and a closed caption gives them nothing.

One more that matters more than any of the above: put the interesting part first. Captions truncate. Whatever is after the "more" link may as well not exist.

If you are writing a month of captions at once, drafting them where your posting schedule lives saves the copy-paste shuffle. Vantr has a free tier if that is useful.
