Tax time without the shoebox

Your year in one place: what came in, what went out, what was deductible, and what you set aside.

Included from the Pro plan. See what each plan covers.

What it is

How tax time without the shoebox works

Net profit for the year so far, with income, expenses and deductible expenses beside it, and the year broken down by month.

A tax set-aside at a percentage you choose, so you can see how much of each payment to put away.

Quarterly estimated tax dates for people filing in the US, with reminders if you want them.

A profit and loss PDF and exports for QuickBooks, Xero or a detailed spreadsheet, built from the same numbers as the page, so they agree to the cent.

Why it matters

The problem underneath it

Creators are usually self-employed, which means nobody takes tax out for you. The bill arrives once or four times a year, and it is only a shock if the money was spent.

Most of an accountant's time on a creator's return is spent sorting the year into order. Handing them a clean export is cheaper than paying them to do it.

Who it is for

And who it is not for

Self-employed creators

Anyone who pays their own tax instead of having it taken from a paycheck.

People with an accountant

One file for them instead of a year of screenshots.

Alternatives

What people use instead

Some of these are genuinely the right answer. It depends on whether your posting is attached to money yet.

Accounting or tax software

It can file your return; Vantr cannot. Many creators use both: Vantr for the year, the export for the filing.

A spreadsheet

Fine if you keep it up every month. Most people rebuild it in April.

Questions

The things people ask first

Does Vantr tell me how much tax I owe?

No, deliberately. That depends on where you live and how you file, and a guess can do real harm. Vantr shows your numbers and what you set aside; a qualified person turns that into a tax bill.

Does it file my taxes or fill in tax forms?

No. It prepares the numbers and the exports your accountant or tax software needs.

Where do the numbers come from?

Paid invoices, confirmed bank deposits, expenses you filed or scanned, and anything you added by hand. Only money you confirmed counts.
