Do hashtags still work? What to actually do in 2026

Hashtags aren't dead, but they don't work the way they used to. Here's what actually moves the needle now — and what's a waste of time.

Every few months someone declares hashtags dead, and every few months someone swears they're the secret to going viral. The truth, as usual, is in between. Here's how discovery actually works now and what to do about it.

What changed

Platforms have shifted from hashtag-based discovery to content-based discovery. Instead of relying on you to tag your topic, the algorithm now reads your video — the audio, the on-screen text, the caption, what people do after watching — and decides who to show it to. That means the content itself matters far more than a wall of tags ever did.

So do they still do anything?

Yes, but a smaller job than before:

  • They give the algorithm context about your topic.
  • They still power search — people do look up hashtags and keywords.
  • On some platforms they help you land in topic feeds.

What they no longer do is magically hand a small account massive reach. Stuffing 30 hashtags won't save weak content, and it never really did.

What to do instead

Write for keywords, not just hashtags

Platforms increasingly work like search engines. Say what your video is about — out loud, in the on-screen text, and in the caption. "Best time to post on Instagram" as spoken words and text does more than #instagramtips ever will.

Use a few relevant tags, not a pile

A handful of specific, genuinely relevant hashtags beats a generic dump. #budgettravel on a budget travel video helps; #fyp #viral #foryou on everything helps nothing.

Mix broad and niche

One or two bigger topic tags plus a couple of specific ones covers both discovery and search without looking spammy.

The real lever is still the content

If your video keeps people watching, gets saves and shares, and clearly signals its topic, it'll travel — with or without perfect hashtags. If it doesn't, no tag strategy will rescue it. Spend the energy you used to spend researching 30 hashtags on your hook and your first three seconds instead. That's where reach is actually decided now.
