Your content can be brilliant, but if the first line is weak, almost nobody will find out. The hook — the first three seconds — is the highest-leverage part of anything you post. Here's how to write ones that actually work.

Why the hook is everything

On every short-video platform, the algorithm watches whether people keep watching. The hook decides that. A strong hook doesn't just earn a view — it earns the watch time that tells the platform to show your video to more people. Weak hook, weak reach, no matter how good the rest is.

Hook formulas that work

You don't need to be clever, you need to be clear. Steal these:

  • The bold claim: "This one setting doubled my reach."
  • The callout: "If you're a creator under 10k followers, watch this."
  • The mistake: "You're posting at the wrong time — here's the right one."
  • The curiosity gap: "Nobody talks about this part of going viral."
  • The result first: "Here's how I made $2,000 from one video."
  • The question: "Why do some Reels flop and others blow up?"

Notice: every one of them promises something specific in return for watching.

Match the words to the visuals

Your spoken hook and your on-screen text should hit in the first second — and they don't have to be identical. Put the boldest version as a text overlay so even a muted, fast-scrolling viewer catches it. Two hooks, one second, double the chance they stop.

Cut the runway

The single most common mistake: a slow intro. "Hey guys, so today I wanted to talk about…" has already lost half your audience. Start in the middle of the value. Delete the warm-up. Your first word should be doing work.

Write the hook first, sometimes

Some of the best creators come up with the hook before the content. If you can't write a compelling first line for an idea, that's useful information — maybe the idea isn't as strong as you thought.

Test relentlessly

Post the same core idea with different hooks and watch which one lands. Keep a running list of your best-performing openers — they're a reusable asset. Hooks are a skill, and like any skill they get sharper with reps. Nail the first three seconds and everything downstream — watch time, shares, follows — gets easier.
