What is a good engagement rate (and why it matters more than followers)

Brands care more about engagement than follower count — and so should you. How to calculate it, what's actually good, and how to improve it.

Follower count is the number creators obsess over and brands increasingly ignore. Engagement rate is the one that actually predicts whether your audience cares — and whether a brand deal will convert. Here's what it is and what counts as good.

How to calculate it

The simplest version:

Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100

So a post with 800 total interactions from a 10,000-follower account is an 8% engagement rate on that post. Average it across your recent posts for a truer picture than any single viral or flop.

What counts as "good"

It varies by platform and audience size, but rough benchmarks:

  • Under 1%: low — your audience is scrolling past.
  • 1–3%: solid, especially for larger accounts.
  • 3–6%: strong.
  • 6%+: excellent, and very attractive to brands.

One rule holds everywhere: smaller accounts usually have higher engagement rates. A 5k account with a tight-knit audience often out-engages a 500k account, which is exactly why brands love micro-creators.

Why brands care more about this than followers

A brand can buy reach anywhere. What they can't buy is an audience that trusts the person recommending their product. High engagement signals that trust — that your followers actually listen. That's why a highly engaged small account can out-earn a big, passive one.

How to improve it

  • Post for saves and shares, not just likes. Genuinely useful or genuinely relatable content gets sent to friends — the interaction that matters most.
  • Ask, don't broadcast. Questions and prompts invite comments.
  • Reply to everything early. Conversations in the comments lift the whole post.
  • Cut what doesn't land. If a format consistently underperforms, stop making it, even if you like it.

Track it over time, not per post

One post's engagement tells you little; the trend tells you everything. Watch whether your average is climbing as you grow — that's the real health metric. And when you pitch brands, lead with this number, not your follower count. It's the one that proves you're worth paying.
