Halloween TikTok trends: how to find them and when to use them

Nobody can tell you in advance which sounds will take off this October. What is predictable is the formats that recur every year, and how to spot a trend early enough to matter.

Every year there are articles listing "this year's Halloween TikTok trends", written in August. They are guesses, and by the time a trend is written up in an article it is usually finished.

So this page does two more useful things: the formats that genuinely recur every year and can be planned in advance, and how to spot a live trend early enough that joining it is worth your time.

October runs Thursday, 1 October 2026 to Saturday, 31 October 2026, in about 3 weeks. The evergreen formats below can be planned now. The live trends cannot, by definition, so do not try.

The formats that come back every year

These are not trends, they are seasonal genres. They return annually in some form, which makes them the only part you can plan ahead.

The transition. Ordinary to costume, on a beat. The oldest one there is and it still performs, because the payoff is instant and the format is legible in half a second.

Last-minute costume from what you own. Peaks in the final week, every single year, driven by genuine urgency. Reliably one of the highest-performing formats of the month.

Costume ideas for a specific identity. "For people with glasses", "for someone who refuses to buy anything", "for a group of four". Specificity is the whole product.

The "you had one job" costume fail. Self-deprecating, cheap to make, highly shareable.

Getting ready with me, themed. The standard format with a seasonal skin.

The niche costume. Whatever your subject is, dressed as something inside it. This is the one with the least competition and the best comments, because your audience feels seen.

Pet reactions. Perennial, requires almost nothing, performs regardless of follower count.

Horror recommendations ranked by how scary they actually are. Genuinely useful, gets saved, works in books, film and games niches.

The overambitious build, documented. Start to finish on something elaborate, whether or not it works. Failure is fine and often better.

Plan two or three of these in advance and your month is largely covered without depending on anything you cannot predict.

How to spot a live trend early

The window for joining a trend usefully is short: roughly the point where you have seen it a few times and it has not yet reached everyone.

Watch your own For You page deliberately. Not passively. Note anything you see three times from different creators in a couple of days. That is the earliest reliable signal most people have.

Check the sounds on rising videos. If a sound is attached to videos posted in the last few days with unusually high view counts relative to their creators' follower counts, it is moving.

Watch smaller creators in your niche. Trends reach large accounts last. If three people with a few thousand followers in your niche are doing the same thing, that is earlier information than anything an article will give you.

Use the platform's own creative and trending tools. They are imperfect and they are still the most direct read on what the platform is pushing.

Look sideways, not just at Halloween. Most Halloween trends are a general trend with a costume on. Whatever format is big in early October will have a spooky variant by the middle of the month.

When to skip a trend

Joining late is worse than not joining. A trend on its way down gets you the competition without the reach, and it makes your account look like it is following rather than participating.

Skip it if:

  • You have seen it in a listicle. By then it is over.
  • It needs equipment or a location you do not have. The cost of a mediocre attempt outweighs the upside.
  • It does not fit your niche at all. A view from someone who will never watch you again is worth very little. Reach without relevance is the most overrated metric in this whole business.
  • It requires you to be someone you are not. It shows, and audiences read it instantly.

What matters more than the trend

Two things, and they beat trend selection every time.

The first two seconds. More views are lost there than anywhere else. The trend gets you into the sound; the hook decides whether anyone stays.

Your own angle. A trend executed identically to everyone else is a coin flip. A trend executed in your specific niche, with your specific joke, is the version people send to their friends.

The creators who do well in October are not the ones who caught the most trends. They are the ones who made two or three genuinely theirs, and posted consistently around them.
